Parampariya Pattu

Court rejects Talwar s plea of seeking closure report

Tamil Nadu's leading textile store Pothys today unveiled a unique 'Parampariya Pattu' (traditional silk saree) with 1000 different blooms woven in it to mark the Diwali festival.

The peacock blue saree with oil mustard border was launched by Pothys Brand Ambassador and noted Carnatic vocalist Sudha Raghunathan. Speaking at the launch function, Pothys Managing Director Ramesh said the unique saree was part of the Pothy's tradition to bring out finest silks to keep the rich art of silk weaving alive by introducing a new concept every Diwali.

He said it took nearly 18 months of research and about 40 days to weave the silk saree. Among the flowers that were woven in saree included Morning Glory, Kurinji, Daffodils, Orchids, Jasmine, World's biggest flower Rafflieshe Arnoldii (found only in Indonesia and weighs 15 pounds) and Shiroli Lilli (heavenly flower found only in Mizoram).

''The story of how this saree was created is fascinating. It was stemmed from the fact that women have been eternally fascinated by flowers and Indian women are especially fond of using flowers to adorn themselves'', he added.

''There are about 1.5 lakh varieties of flowers in the world. Of this, 4000 were identified and 1000 shortlisted on the basis of various factors like colour, shape and beauty'', Mr Ramesh said and added that the saree had 2,400 hooks in the ratio of 1:1. About 1,56,391 design cards were used.

A team of seven members toiled hard day and night for about 40 days to weave the saree in Kancheepuram, ubiquitous for silk sarees.

The 1.4 kg six-yard saree, considered a treasured posession, was priced at Rs 39,000 and it would be woven based on orders.

''Already the order books are full with people from US, France, UK and Canada placing orders for the saree'', Mr Ramesh said. The saree would be on display at the Pothy's outlet.

''Silk sarees have been part of India's rich cultural tradition and this initiative is aimed at keeping alive the tradition through intrdoucing innovation'', Mr Ramesh added.
